analysing film sequences - crimson peak

My assignment is to make a two minute opening sequence for a film of my choice .  I decided to produce my film based around the genre of horror ,  I am now going to analyse a horror film called Crimson Peak in order to help me  get some inspiration  for my own horror film as I will be more aware  of the different camera angles and the use of mise -en scene in the film  and how quickly everything can change and get more dramatic and intense as the film moves along.

However the sub genre of Crimson peak is that it does have a unique outlook on horror as it carries a gothic theme , I know this because of the use of dark lighting in between scenes to make the audience on the edge of there seats  and it sets the scene for the audience as  the use  of dark lighting can create the illusion of shadows  these are  effective as you are allowing  the audience to see what the  film is about because  you are showing a sense of  mystery as you want to know who is creating the shadows and why they are happening  however if you had a bright light and a  open airy  space  it would not create the same effect and the audience would get bored as nothing is scaring them and your audience would lose interest in your film  but by having dark lighting in horror films you are providing a better environment and you are making the genre of your film easy to analyse .

On the other hand Crimson peak is different compared to other horror films like Carrie because Carrie does not follow a gothic theme .

The opening scene begins with a  shot of Edith fixing her dads tie and this is effective because it shows how her dad has pushed her into going to this event and it shows that her dad is caring and that he is pushing her to go and it also shows how if she didn't go to that ball
then she wouldn't have meet Thomas who she is madly in love with  there is bright lighting to suggest that this was a happier time in Edith's life .

Also it shows the representation of the characters as it shows the different status that the two characters have the women is seen as the shy and not confident character whereas the man is seen as powerful and has a more important status .

In this scene a over the shoulder shot is  used to show the emotions and expressions between the two characters and to show how protective he is over Edith and to show the different strengths and weakness that these two characters have for one  another as father and daughter.
